Ni siquiera aquellos intr\u00e9pidos\u00a0astronautas\u00a0que dejaron sus huellas\u00a0en la Luna.\u00a0\u00bfProvocaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica deliberada? \u00bfSutileza terminol\u00f3gica? \u00bfO quiz\u00e1s un fen\u00f3meno atmosf\u00e9rico que ha permanecido oculto?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque parezca controvertido, investigaciones recientes respaldan esta sorprendente declaraci\u00f3n. Eso s\u00ed, siempre y cuando se acepte una definici\u00f3n muy extendida (literalmente) de lo que entendemos por \u00abatm\u00f3sfera\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fronteras difusas&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Olvidemos, pues, la imagen escolar de fronteras n\u00edtidas entre Tierra y espacio. La naturaleza, ajena a nuestras categor\u00edas y simplificaciones, opera con mayor sutileza; la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre no termina abruptamente donde comienza el cielo negro, sino que se diluye gradualmente, volvi\u00e9ndose cada vez m\u00e1s tenue hasta entrelazarse imperceptiblemente con el vac\u00edo interplanetario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abSi pensamos en la atm\u00f3sfera en la que vivimos y respiramos aqu\u00ed en la Tierra, no se detiene justo encima de nuestras cabezas. No se detiene en el Everest. No se detiene donde vuelan los aviones. Sigue y sigue hacia arriba, y se hace cada vez menos densa cuanto m\u00e1s alto subes\u00bb,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2aVWZOFrjdc&amp;list=PL2aBZuCeDwlQiDSAaW1y0mOU8FC2f8v3g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explica Doug Rowland,<\/a>\u00a0experto en heliof\u00edsica\u00a0de la NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L\u00ednea de K\u00e1rm\u00e1n: la frontera artificial del espacio exterior<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Esta gradual disminuci\u00f3n de densidad complica la definici\u00f3n de d\u00f3nde termina realmente nuestra atm\u00f3sfera. Aunque por convenci\u00f3n&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-atmosphere\/earths-atmosphere-a-multi-layered-cake\/\">utilizamos la l\u00ednea de K\u00e1rm\u00e1n<\/a>&nbsp;(100 kil\u00f3metros sobre la superficie terrestre) como frontera entre la atm\u00f3sfera y el espacio exterior, esta es m\u00e1s una convenci\u00f3n pr\u00e1ctica que una realidad f\u00edsica absoluta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-atmosphere\/earths-atmosphere-a-multi-layered-cake\/\">Seg\u00fan la NASA,<\/a>&nbsp;el 99,99997 por ciento de la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre se encuentra por debajo de la l\u00ednea de K\u00e1rm\u00e1n. Pero ese 0,00003% restante se extiende mucho m\u00e1s lejos de lo que hab\u00edamos imaginado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\u00ed, quiz\u00e1 lo m\u00e1s sorprendente sea que, si miramos m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la l\u00ednea K\u00e1rm\u00e1n, ni siquiera la\u00a0Estaci\u00f3n Espacial Internacional (EEI),\u00a0s\u00edmbolo por excelencia de nuestros logros espaciales, est\u00e1 completamente fuera de la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abCuando vas a donde est\u00e1\u00a0la Estaci\u00f3n Espacial\u00a0\u2013a solo unos cientos de kil\u00f3metros por encima de la Tierra\u2013 todav\u00eda hay suficiente aire all\u00ed para frenar a\u00a0la Estaci\u00f3n Espacial.\u00a0Y si no la reimpulsaras con cohetes, volver\u00eda a la Tierra bas\u00e1ndose en la resistencia del aire\u00bb, contin\u00faa Rowland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">El estudio SOHO: cuando la ciencia redefine nuestros l\u00edmites atmosf\u00e9ricos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aun as\u00ed, el verdadero sustento de esta controvertida afirmaci\u00f3n \u2013que nunca hemos abandonado la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre\u2013 proviene de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2018JA026136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">un revelador estudio publicado en febrero de 2019.<\/a>\u00a0En \u00e9l, cient\u00edficos que analizaron datos del Observatorio Solar y Heliosf\u00e9rico (SOHO), un proyecto conjunto de la NASA y la\u00a0Agencia Espacial Europea,\u00a0llegaron a una conclusi\u00f3n sorprendente: los confines m\u00e1s remotos de nuestra atm\u00f3sfera \u2013una tenue nube de \u00e1tomos de hidr\u00f3geno denominada geocorona\u2013 se extienden hasta 629.300 kil\u00f3metros en el espacio, casi 50 veces el di\u00e1metro de nuestro planeta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abLa Luna vuela a trav\u00e9s de la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre\u00bb, declar\u00f3 Igor Baliukin, del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Espacial de Rusia y autor principal del estudio,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Earth_s_atmosphere_stretches_out_to_the_Moon_and_beyond\">en un comunicado de la ESA.<\/a>&nbsp;\u00abNo \u00e9ramos conscientes de ello hasta que desempolvamos las observaciones realizadas hace m\u00e1s de dos d\u00e9cadas por la nave espacial SOHO\u00bb, agreg\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/72354207_906.jpg\" alt=\"La Estaci\u00f3n Espacial Internacional est\u00e1 a 400 kil\u00f3metros sobre la Tierra, donde la delgada atm\u00f3sfera a\u00fan ejerc\u00eda suficiente resistencia para frenar su \u00f3rbita sin propulsi\u00f3n continua.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">La Estaci\u00f3n Espacial Internacional est\u00e1 a 400 kil\u00f3metros sobre la Tierra, donde la delgada atm\u00f3sfera a\u00fan ejerc\u00eda suficiente resistencia para frenar su \u00f3rbita sin propulsi\u00f3n continua.<small>Imagen: NASA\/ZUMA\/picture alliance<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La geocorona: nuestra atm\u00f3sfera invisible hasta la Luna<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As\u00ed, si este estudio es correcto, incluso los astronautas que caminaron\u00a0sobre la Luna\u00a0nunca abandonaron realmente la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre. A la distancia de la Luna,\u00a0a unos 384.000 km de la Tierra,\u00a0a\u00fan existen aproximadamente 0,2 \u00e1tomos de hidr\u00f3geno por cent\u00edmetro c\u00fabico, seg\u00fan revel\u00f3 el estudio de 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abEn aquella \u00e9poca, los astronautas que se encontraban en la superficie lunar no sab\u00edan que en realidad estaban incrustados en la periferia de la geocorona\u00bb, explica Jean-Loup Bertaux, coautor del estudio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Es importante se\u00f1alar que esta geocorona es extremadamente tenue. Por ejemplo, a&nbsp;60.000 kil\u00f3metros de la Tierra, hay apenas 70 \u00e1tomos de hidr\u00f3geno por cent\u00edmetro c\u00fabico, lo que en t\u00e9rminos terrestres considerar\u00edamos un vac\u00edo casi total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00bfD\u00f3nde comienza realmente el espacio?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Si lo anterior ya resulta sorprendente, la cuesti\u00f3n se complica a\u00fan m\u00e1s cuando intentamos definir d\u00f3nde comienza realmente el espacio. Considerando que este empezar\u00eda una vez abandonada la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre, nos enfrentamos a otra revelaci\u00f3n desconcertante: tanto la Tierra como la Luna se encuentran, t\u00e9cnicamente, dentro de la propia\u00a0atm\u00f3sfera solar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abAs\u00ed que existe una especie de dicotom\u00eda en la que pasas de la Tierra, la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre, a la atm\u00f3sfera solar. Y luego, en alg\u00fan momento, est\u00e1s fuera de ella cuando alcanzas la heliopausa y el l\u00edmite de la heliosfera\u00bb, explic\u00f3 Rowland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Este experto de la NASA ofrece una perspectiva pragm\u00e1tica sobre la cuesti\u00f3n: \u00abSi la pregunta es: &#8216;\u00bfD\u00f3nde empieza el espacio?&#8217; Depende de tu punto de vista\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/71790101_906.jpg\" alt=\"El sorprendente alcance de nuestra atm\u00f3sfera redefine nuestra comprensi\u00f3n del espacio cercano. Seg\u00fan Baliukin, \u00abestas part\u00edculas no suponen ninguna amenaza para los viajeros espaciales en futuras misiones tripuladas en \u00f3rbita alrededor de la Luna\u00bb, ya que la densidad de la geocorona es extremadamente baja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abTambi\u00e9n hay radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta asociada a la geocorona, ya que los \u00e1tomos de hidr\u00f3geno dispersan la luz solar en todas direcciones, pero el impacto sobre los astronautas en \u00f3rbita lunar ser\u00eda insignificante en comparaci\u00f3n con la principal fuente de radiaci\u00f3n: el Sol\u00bb, afirma Bertaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sin embargo, esta geocorona podr\u00eda interferir en futuras observaciones astron\u00f3micas realizadas en las proximidades de la Luna, especialmente para telescopios espaciales que observan en longitudes de onda ultravioletas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implicaciones astron\u00f3micas y b\u00fasqueda de planetas habitables<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Por otra parte, el descubrimiento de esta inmensa extensi\u00f3n de nuestra atm\u00f3sfera no solo cambia nuestra comprensi\u00f3n del espacio cercano a la Tierra, sino que tambi\u00e9n podr\u00eda tener implicaciones para la b\u00fasqueda de planetas habitables. Seg\u00fan el criterio tradicional, indudablemente s\u00ed. Pero si consideramos la medici\u00f3n de la geocorona del estudio de 2019, ni siquiera las misiones Apolo escaparon completamente de nuestro manto atmosf\u00e9rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bajo esta nueva perspectiva cient\u00edfica resulta fascinante pensar que los astronautas\u00a0del Apolo 16,\u00a0que instalaron el primer telescopio lunar en 1972, estuvieran, sin saberlo, operando dentro de la atm\u00f3sfera de nuestro planeta.
